I just wanted to post some pictures of a landscaping job we designed and installed in Atlanta recently. This is a front yard in which we eliminated the lawn and installed raised garden beds made from 6" X 6" timbers and pathways made of stone and gravel, then enclosed it with a picket fence. The advantage of the raised beds is that you can fill them with high quality soil rather than having to work with the soil you have on site, which may not be ideal for what you want to plant. They also help keep a distinct line between the pathways and the planting beds so that, in this case, the gravel doesn't mix into the soil and vice versa. And I think they create a better look overall.
